Beja in the alentejo, portugal. Etching. Image 165 x 246 mm, plate 192 x 255 mm. Signed j. C. Robinson 1872 in ink. Inscribed top right in the plate: "yes. Speak english. All right. Fox pyles. " inscribed lower left in 19th century handwriting: "the visconde de montserrat ~ from the artist ~ in remembrance of their unexpected and unintentional but most delightful excursion to baja. " a fascinating dedication, the vsconde de monserrat was sir francis cook (1817-1901), whose collection of paintings at doughty house richmond and the quinta at monserratt was formed with robinson's advice. Date: 1872.
