Gonçalo inocentes (matheos), slot ter hooge, shipwreck in guilherme bay, porto santo, autonomous region of madeira
shipwreck in the bay of guilherme, the “rescue” of a story, lisbon, bertrand, oct. 2018. The slot ter hooge, or slotter, returned in 1724 from the dutch east indies with an important silver shipment of 1,500 8-weight bars from amsterdam. Off porto santo, with 254 men on board, it faced a storm, sinking. 33 men escaped and returned to the hague. 1st lieutenant baartel taerlink made the report and, a year later, an english team commanded by john lethbridge lifted part of the load, then only 346 bars. He would return in 1733 and 1734, but equally with modest results. In 1974, treasure hunter robert sténuit (1933-) obtained authorization from the dutch and portuguese governments to collect what was left of the slot ter hooge estate. The situation raised some regional controversy, with the removal of all the material by vacuuming, and it was possible to force the team to deposit part of the exhumed material at funchal customs. After the situation was brought to court, robert sténuit asserted his rights, obtaining authorization to remove all the material. After that, he offered ten percent of the same material, now on display at casa colombo in porto santo. Pub. By robert sténuit, “the treasure of porto santo“, article from national geographic, official journal of the national geographic society, washington, d. C. , vol. 148, no. 2, august 1975, p. 261.
