Wamba's election as king, Francisco de Paula Van Halen, 1843

The canvas represents the election of wamba (?-688) as king of the visigoths. Wamba rejected the appointment due to his advanced age, but was forced by the nobility to accept the throne on september 1, 672 in the town of gertici or gérticos, later called wamba in his honor, and where his predecessor, king recesvinto, had died. On his own initiative, so that his election would not be considered a usurpation, wamba demanded to be crowned king in toledo, where he was anointed on september 20 by bishop quirico in the praetorian church of saints peter and saints. Wamba renounced the throne in the year 680 and died in the year 688. He was succeeded to the throne by king ervigius. Object Type: painting. Date: 1843.
