The representative, full-length, life-size portrait of juliane zu schaumburg-lippe (1761-1799) shows the young princess as a lover of music. In an interior room in front of a piano, she leans on the back of an armchair and holds a music book in her right hand. She poses in an elegant gala dress made of green silk with a pink bodice bow and a sash of the same color. Just like the robe, the high-backed hairstyle with the rich headdress of artificial flowers and silk veil and the individual curls falling onto the shoulders corresponds to the french courtly style of the ancien régime. For the wall niche decorated with pilasters and stucco reliefs and the drapery, tischbein the elder used conventional props from princely representation portraits. The portrait is – like many of tischbein’s paintings from the late 1780s – dominated by a muted, warm colour scheme of brown-red tones, complemented by a strong green. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: 1781. Medium: oil. Depicted People: Landgravine Juliane of Hesse-Philippsthal. Collection: Hessen Kassel Heritage. Juliane, Fürstin zu Schaumburg-Lippe
