This watercolour painting by william armstrong (1822–1914) depicts the railway bridge (breslau bridge) over the grand river near breslau, ontario, canada. Wedge-shaped blocks at the foot of the bridge piers (used for icebreaking during winter) are visible. Two canoes are visible near the river, as well as a number of human figures on and around the bridge. Armstrong was a railway engineer, artist, draughtsman, and photographer who worked for the grand trunk railway early in his career, with a number of his works depicting railway scenes and activities. He also prominently featured colonial and first nations themes, depicting a changing canadian landscape and society of railways and industry meeting with the natural environment and with indigenous peoples. Date: 1856. Medium: watercolour.
