iconographic description:
on this poster promoting an edition of scenes from the private and public life of animals available in bookstores, a monkey, a letter painter sitting on a scaffold, writes the title of the work on a wall with a brush, under the gaze of curious animals, namely a parrot, a fish, a bird and a frog. A street dog wearing a newsboy cap, licking a paintbrush and standing on a ladder serves as his assistant. Other, almost illegible posters are stuck on the same wall. It is the subject of the frontispiece of volume i which is represented here. In the volume, the latter is captioned (in the second printing): "posters will be, according to his orders, affixed to all the walls in the four parts of the world, on the famous wall of china itself.
