Place du Châtelet and Pont au Change, 1876, Theodor Josef Hubert Hoffbauer, between 1875 and 1882

"the place du châtelet takes its name from the ancient fortress, le grand châtelet, that was constructed to guard the pont au change. It was destroyed by napoléon i. Napleon iii, however, gave it its present form. In the center of the place stands a fountain. A column, built in 1808, is a monument to the victories of napoléon i. " the théâtre du châtelet was opened in 1862. It was well served by tramway stations, so it attracted large crowds at the end of the 19th century. The théâtre lyrique, on the place du châtelet, was inaugurated in 1862. The theatre was burnt down in 1871, but rebuilt on the same architectural plan. Date: between 1875 and 1882. Dimensions: 24 x 30 cm. Medium: lithograph. Collection: Brown University Library. Place du Châtelet et Pont au Change, 1876
