After the title: '"hide your diminished heads"' [adapted from 'paradise lost']. France, a heroic figure backed by clouds, with a dramatic gesture, tears in half papers headed 'royal ordinance charles'; she breaks under her foot a sceptre which lies against a crown. She wears classical draperies, a breast-plate, and a laurel-wreathed helmet on which is an angry (bonapartist) eagle, see bm satires no. 16221; this is the centre of lightning darts which strike representatives of the bourbons. Charles x (left) and polignac (right) stagger backwards, while five effete supporters, abjectly terrified, fall or flee to left and right. Aug 7 1830 lithograph. Date: 1830.
