Inscribed on back in ink: '199 raicotta'; in pencil: 'riacotta. May 9th, 1792. ' rayacottai formed part of a chain of military outposts used by tipu sultan's forces on their campaigns in the tamil country. In the journal that the young william daniell kept we read (entry for 9 may 1792), "ryacotta is one of the highest and strongest hill forts of the barramah'l. " it was captured in july 1791 by major gowdie, '. . Who soon carried by assault the lower works which enclosed the pettah' (the commercial suburb outside a fortress). Object Type: sketch.
