- the motif is treated in a number of pictures by cranach, the oldest from approx. 1512-14, and already in 1508 in one of his woodcuts (kks, 26. 62). - already in the first half of the 15th century, this motif was used in the middle rhine regions (see: von bode1918). - the interpretation of the motif appears from inscriptions on similar representations, cf. : durrieu, "la legende du roi de mercie" in monuments piot xxiv (1920) 149ff.
