My beloved mum! today i finally have an evening to myself again and i want to send you my warmest regards. How lovely a free evening is. I've been looking forward to it for a long time, which is why i didn't make any arrangements. Now i'm sitting in our cozy living room, the radio is playing softly and the fire is crackling in the stove. Before that i took a nice bath - you'll be amazed, they do things like that in the army - then i shaved, so i'm writing to you, all smart and well-groomed, my mamschl. You see, you can endure being in the military and that's why you have to use this time as best you can. And you can imagine that i do that. Date: 6 January 1945.
