iconographic description:
resumption with variations of the composition representing the funeral procession of charles hugo, produced for the edition of "l'année terrible" by michèle lévy in 1874. Based on the drawing by victor hugo, published in "la vie moderne" of february 28, 1880, bearing the mention "from nature" (inv. 2017. 0. 494. 1 and 2017. 0. 494. 2) daniel virginie would have witnessed the funeral procession; he produced three versions of the scene: the first for the edition of "l'année terrible" by michel lévy, in 1874, then for the hugues edition of the same work in 1879. Historical commentary:
in a letter to paul meurice, linked to the creation of the museum, daniel virginie wrote: "i am now starting to write your composition on the burial of charles hugo. " if it is indeed this work, which would therefore be a commission from paul meurice for the opening of the museum, virginie reproduces here, in large format, with a few variations, the drawing which he had given for the illustration of "l'année terrible" in the michel lévy edition in 1874 and which was reproduced in the hugues edition in 1879.
