description:
oil on framed canvas. Iconographic description:
the painter very faithfully represented the place des halles, to the east of the apse of the saint-eustache church, as it appeared at the end of the ancien régime. Towards the right, the dominant point of the composition is formed by the pillory, with its high pointed roof, where the bankrupts, beggars and insolent servants were exposed. In the center of the composition, the fontaine des halles, dating from 1605. Behind the pillory and the fountain, the two large long buildings are, on the right, the tide market, on the left, the salt market. Historical commentary:
on the occasion of the royal couple's visit, magnificent ceremonies took place at the town hall from january 21 to 23, 1782 – banquet, ball, fireworks, etc. At the same time, "popular rejoicings" were organized in various squares and crossroads in paris, with distribution of wine, buffets and open-air orchestras. On the far left of the painting we notice a group representing the king, the queen, madame élisabeth and madame royale, accompanied by a guard, who have come to watch the popular ball. It is unlikely that such a visit took place; the presence of the king has symbolic value here. Mode of acquisition: purchase
