A 'diadem'-class cruiser
a stern view of one of the later 'diadem' class 1st-class protected cruisers. There were four of these: 'amphitrite', 'argonaut', 'ariadne' and 'spartiate' (all 1898), and they could be distinguished from the earlier four 'diadems' by the bulwark round the aft superstructure and by the quarterdeck guns being mounted on a small platform. The date has to be 1907-14 because the platform low on the mainmast was fitted in 1907. The location shown is probably the south railway jetty at portsmouth. Date: 1907. Dimensions: 452 mm x 308 mm. Collection: Fine art.
