The feast of balthasar is a painting (oil on canvas, 202 x 297 cm) located in naples in the capodimonte museum (inv. Q 263) in the neapolitan gallery. It represents the banquet given by belshazzar, the last king of babylon, as narrated in the bible in chapter 5 of the book of daniel. During the banquet, belshazzar had the gold and silver vases taken from the temple of jerusalem brought to drink with his dignitaries, his wives and concubines. Suddenly a hand appeared and wrote some incomprehensible words on the opposite wall. First calling his soothsayers, they were unable to interpret them. Then daniel was called and he read them: it was god's judgment on belshazzar and his kingdom, which announced to him that he had been judged and found guilty, and that his kingdom had come to an end and would be divided. That same night belshazzar was killed and his kingdom taken by the medes and persians. Object Type: painting. Date: between 1653 and 1659. Dimensions: height: 202 cm (79.5 in); width: 297 cm (116.9 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: National Museum of Capodimonte. Mattia Preti - Baldassarre's Feast - WGA18380
