The experts at bruun rasmussen had trouble reading the inscription. At statens museum for kunst in copenhagen there is a somewhat similar painting, described as a study for this work. It has horses, a cart and some people, but the layout is entirely different. The experts at the museum saw it as a work based on ludvig holberg's play kilderejsen, although marstrand for that purpose normally dressed his characters as in holberg's days, and not - as here - in contemporary (1830) dress.
