Wren's original design for the summit of the monument, 1873 (1887 copy)

Wren's original design for the summit of the monument. The monument, in the city of london, was erected to commemorate the great fire of 1666. It was designed by sir christopher wren. This is one of his designs for the decoration on the top: a statue of king charles ii, 15 feet high. It was rejected on the grounds of expense, and a vase or urn of flames was chosen instead. Date: 1873 (1887 copy).
