Nash was probably influenced in this work by crw nevinson's handling of a similar subject matter in his war work, 'column on the march' (c. 1914). There are also similarities with nash in nevinson's empty war-desecrated landscapes like 'a flooded trench on the yser' (1916). Nash certainly admired nevinson, and recorded in a letter to edward marsh on 7 july 1917 that they had just met. Image: a view along a straight road lined with tall trees. The trees stand uniformly glowing in a ghostly light, looming over a column of british soldiers marching down the road. The rain drives across the composition from the left, and the soldiers huddle beneath cloaks whilst marching. Object Type: print, lithograph. Date: 1918. Dimensions: height: 72.7 cm (28.6 in) ; width: 49.9 cm (19.6 in). Medium: ink, lithograph on paper. Collection: Canadian War Museum. Marching at Night, 1918 Paul Nash - RA Collection- Art
