Madonna and Child with both Saints John. Bardi altarpiece, Sandro Botticelli, 1485

Madonna and Child with both Saints John. Bardi altarpiece, Sandro Botticelli, 1485

The virgin is represented with the child jesus on a throne, she is preparing to breastfeed him. She is surrounded by saint john the baptist (on the left, who seems to be addressing the faithful) and saint john the evangelist (on the right, with his traditional attributes: the book and the quill). The overall composition and the landscape in front of which the characters are represented make this painting original and beautiful. The iconographic symbols are very numerous: the enclosed garden, the white lilies, the vases, the red flowers, the palm fronds. They evoke the purity of mary, the future passion of christ and translate the role and place of the virgin in christian mysticism. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1485. Place of creation: Italy. Dimensions: height: 185 cm (72.8 in); width: 180 cm (70.8 in). Medium: oil on poplar wood. Depicted People: Christ Child, Virgin Mary, John the Evangelist, John the Baptist. Collection: Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Vierge avec Saints (Gemäldegalerie, Berlin) (11328146525)
