Acquired as an anonymous portrait, gk 515 was only associated with francesco i de medici (1541-1587; 1574 grand duke of tuscany) since g. Gronau. K. Langedijk, florence, considers this identification to be unfounded, lehmann still maintains it. He thinks he can recognize the prince's name in the inscription, but the letters are very unclear. * initially listed as a work by jacopo bassano, later attributed to his workshop or one of his sons. Lehmann's attribution to paolo veronese raises doubts for qualitative reasons, due to the poorly accentuated modeling and highlights. Pignatti and cocke agreed with this, but pallucchini rejected it and, like gronau, spoke in favor of francesco bassano as the author. A. Ballarin (padua) also tends to this view (1991). (b. Schnackenburg, 1996). Date: 1570 - 1580. Francesco Bassano - Bildnis eines Mannes in Halbfigur, ein Schriftstück haltend, 1570 - 1580, GK 515
