Real alter. News that, at the request of the governor, king d. Carlos (1863-1908) was going to offer the owner of fajã da ovelha augusto césar de gouveia (1856-1922) an “alter real” horse, which was scheduled to arrive in funchal on the following april 9th. Beginning of the third term of josé ribeiro da cunha (ii) (1854-1915) as civil governor of funchal. Born in the algés area on december 5, 1854, he was the son of the important financier josé ribeiro da cunha (1813-1883), who had made a fortune in the exploitation of tobacco contracts and, between 1871 and 1877, built a mansion in the patriarcal queimada area, today largo príncipe real, at the end of the last century the seat of the rectory of the new university of lisbon. The son, a law graduate from the university of coimbra, having married in funchal with josefina de ornelas e vasconcelos de castelo branco manoel (1864-1919), daughter of the 2nd baron of são pedro (1837-1911), senior manager of the ministry of foreign affairs, his father-in-law called him to a diplomatic career, being civil governor of funchal with the regenerator hintze-franco cabinet (1849-1907) and (18 55-1929), between april 9, 1896 and february 4, 1897. Ribeiro da cunha later served as secretary of the portuguese delegation to the hague peace conference, in 1899, which included the advisor agostinho de ornelas de vasconcelos (1836-1901) and his son aires de ornelas (1866-1930), being placed at the last minute, again, as governor of funchal to receive the royal visit of june 1901. He would occupy the place again in 1906 and, still in 1910, being in são lourenço when the acclamation of the republic took place, thus being the only one to occupy this place four times. He died in lisbon on may 14, 1915, hit by shrapnel from a grenade thrown at his residence in alto de santa catarina. Date: 30 March 1906.
