Florence became the second capital of the young kingdom of italy on 3 february 1865, maintaining the title until 1871. On that same february day, after the tragic riots in turin, vittorio emanuele ii (1820-1878) left for the tuscan capital, accompanied by general alfonso la marmora. He reached the city using the railway network in the evening of that same day. The welcome was festive. The procession of carriages that accompanied him traveled through the streets of the city center up to palazzo pitti where the sovereign established his apartments. The pictorial scene favors, however, the moment of the sovereign's public appearance from a symbolic place in the history of the city: the palazzo vecchio. The artist, enrico fanfani, active above all in the genres of romantic history painting of the past and in academic female figures of sacred, mythological and allegorical subjects, represented the theme of the arrival of vittorio emanuele ii in the tuscan capital in several versions. Date: 1865.
