Cawnpore (now known as kanpur) was the site of brutal fighting in the indian rebellion of 1857. During the fighting, about 200 british subjects, mostly women and children, were massacred here, their bodies dumped into the well. According to 19th century travel guides, the gothic screen surrounding the well was designed by sir henry yule. The surrounding garden area is still a park today, known as nana rao park.
