Jacob michael reinhold lenz (1751-1792) drawing by pfenniger. Living in strasburg as tutor to two baltic barons, he met goethe, who became close to him. Talented as a poet, but hampered by mental illness, he was unable to gain a foothold in weimar. Lenz is the most brilliant of the "sturm und drange" poets, several of his plays, such as "the tutor" and "the soldiers", have been attributed to goethe.
