The trip to norway in 1890 was for zorn primarily a recreational trip (after a longer work-intensive period) together with the banker martin rikoff and his wife clara, both of whom had commissioned their portraits of zorn. Zorn tells the following about the trip: "monsiuer rikoff wanted us to travel comfortably and at the descent to (an) isthmus south of tronhjem he engaged two heavy landers for the whole way to christiania […] geiranger fjord made the most powerful impression on me.
