Various philippine animals and plants, detail from carta hydrographica y chorographica de las islas filipinas (1734). Captions in spanish: cayman, o cocodrilo, de que stan llenos los rios de estas islas - the rivers of these islands are full of caiman, or crocodiles. Saua, culebra muy grande - sawa (tagalog), very large snake indio en bata que arando con un carabao, o bufalo - native filipino in robe, plowing with a carabao, or water buffalo luzon, en que se pila el arroz y de donde se llamo luzon esta isla - lusong (tagalog), wooden mortar used in de-husking rice, from which the name of luzon (largest island in the philippines) was derived. Other captions: cuervo blanco - white raven cacao - cacao tree, source of chocolate plantano - plantain, banana-like plant and fruit the structure behind the woman pounding rice is a bahay kubo, a native house raised on stilts.
