This – unfortunately very low-resolution – reproduction of a lithograph from 1842 commemorated the abolition of the peinliche halsgerichtsordnung, the so-called carolina, which was issued under emperor charles v in 1532 and valid until 1840, and which was replaced by the new penal code in 1840 during the time of the kingdom of hanover. After the painter karl hoff, presumably on commission from the count of schwicheldt-flachstöckheim, had produced a large charcoal drawing (which can now be found in the bomann museum in celle), this reduced and reversed lithograph from the printing shop of julius giere was published by the celle bookshop of friedrich capaun-karlowa. The original sheet is subtitled as follows: “the funeral ceremony of carolina, in memory of celle and the contemporaries of the royal hanoverian patent of august 8th, 1840. Carl hoff lith. /published by fr. Capaun in celle/gedr. Id giereschen hof-steindruckerei hannover". Date: 1842.
