During the battle of verdun in 1916, the town of verdun suffered numerous destructions. Indeed, a quarter of the city was completely destroyed, half was seriously damaged and the last quarter was looted (see the wikipedia page on the city of verdun). From april to august 1916, gaston laplace walked the different streets of the town verdun and drew the various marks due to the clashes between the german army and the french army. In this drawing, gaston laplace represents rue mazel. This street is located near the citadel. This extremely strategic location was heavily bombarded during the battle of verdun. The streets adjacent to the citadel therefore suffered heavy damage. In the foreground on the left side is a pile of ruins while in the background is a building where only the load-bearing walls remain. The title of the work is at the bottom left and the artist's signature is at the bottom right. Date: 20 April 1916. Dimensions: height: 21 cm (8.2 in); width: 16 cm (6.2 in). Medium: indian ink and pen on paper. Collection: La contemporaine. Verdun, rue Mazel, 20-4-16
