Sir john st. Clair allan ramsay painted this portrait from life in 1754 upon john st. Clair's (? - 1767) appointment as deputy quartermaster general for north america, a position given to him by the duke of cumberland. St. Clair served in this position for the braddock and forbes campaigns and was at fort ligonier in 1758.
