According to dahl's diary entries from 1847, the painting "landscape near kaupanger with stave church" was commissioned from him by the collector hans konow from christiania, whereby dahl emphasizes that he had closely observed the characteristics of the region and its vegetation. Since the previously famous medieval stave church in kaupanger had only survived with structural changes, it was replaced in the depiction of dahl's painting by a view of the stave church in the norwegian town of vang. This church in vang was to make way for a new building and be demolished in 1840, but at dahl's instigation it was purchased by the prussian king friedrich wilhelm iv in 1841, dismantled, broken down into individual parts and rebuilt in the town of krummhübel in the giant mountains in silesia.
