The iconoclasts by domenico morelli is a painting (oil on canvas, 262 x 213 cm) located in naples in the capodimonte museum (inv. Ps 74), in the galleria dell' ottocento. The byzantine monk saint lazarus is represented there, who, at the time of the iconoclastic persecutions of the 8th century under leo iii the isaurian, was discovered painting sacred images and was about to have his hand cut off. The friar is actually a symbol of liberal ideals, while the persecutors allude to the policemen of the bourbon guard. Through this episode of sacred history morelli depicts the libertarian and risorgimento demands expressed and then suffocated in the uprisings of 1848. Date: 19th century.
