Pluton et Proserpine, Bernard Salomon, 1564

This is a print containing a passage from ovid's metamorphoses translated into french and an illustration by the hand of bernard salomon. The text and illustration are surrounded by a rich decoration. The mythological episode represented is the following: the naiad (nimbus of fresh water) cyané tries to prevent pluto from kidnapping his playmate proserpina. Unable to save her friend, she dissolves in tears and melts into his pool. The print is part of the 1564 edition of the metamorphosis of ovid figured, published by the french typographer jean de tournes. Date: 1564. Medium: gravure.
