Man with enigmatic expression by T & J Holroyd (2), between 1863 and 1872

Photograph of a man with an enigmatic expression by t & j holroyd of harrogate. The photographers were brothers thomas holroyd (1821–1904) and james holroyd (c. 1825–1874). Thomas was a portrait and landscape painter, and james was a photographer, both from harrogate, north yorkshire, england. Although they were both credited, it was james who took most of the photographs. Critical commentary: this man could be sad, or he could be about to smile. There is something wrong with the fingers of his left hand, which is perhaps intentionally half-hidden. He appears to be wearing an undershirt. He has apparently attempted to grow sideburns, but they have grown sparsely, and his hair has been professionally styled. That said, it is a graceful portrait of a person who looks vulnerable.
