Barker's the studio of salvator rosa in the mountains of the abruzzi, 1865," the art bulletin, vol. 71, no. 4 (dec. 1989), pp. 660-673, suggests that the bearded bandit shown here was an homage to garibaldi; barker had previously painted a portrait of garibaldi known only from a later engraving.
