two protagonists share this scene. On the left, a man is lying nonchalantly on his hood, a small suitcase to be waxed next to him, his arms crossed on his chest and his head is that of a calf. On the right, a man with the head of a horse bends under the effort of pulling a handcart containing a whole jumble of furniture, crockery and domestic objects. Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "hey! friend, i work like a horse all day, in order to eat my peck of oats every evening [. . . ] i don't want to insult you, young calf, out of respect for your race [. . . ] but, i would not be sorry to know what you can be good for [. . . ] i polish boots in my spare moments: it softens my hand and my back [. . . ] i will be rich; i have the ambition of a calf who feels well born"
