Historical-critical news: antonio maffei is a figure of great importance in nineteenth-century valtellina culture: in addition to holding the archpriest, he dedicated himself to an intense scholarly activity. He played an important role in the establishment of the committee for archaeological studies, of which he was vice-president and active promoter together with caimi. The portrait uses the standing figure scheme, presenting the priest with an austere tone and a certain majesty. Note the absence of the pastoral staff, replaced by a book that maffei is holding in his hand. Remarkable, as always, is the care in the description of the lace and folds. The canvas takes as its basis the half-length portrait, painted by caimi in 1847. Object Type: painting. Date: circa 1885. Dimensions: height: 154 cm (60.6 in); width: 94 cm (37 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Museo valtellinese di storia e arte.
