iconographic description:
the table of contents of the 6th vol. From “la caricature” specifies that the scene takes place in front of “the temple of money”, that is to say the stock exchange (the brongniart palace). Behind a railing, two mechanized wooden puppets swing. On the left, the nemesis, turns around a bar to which hangs a bag of coins containing “10,000” francs. This puppet wears a small skirt, mustaches, and a hat with large feathers. Auguste marseille barthélemy, from march 1831 to april 1832, published a series of satires in verse in the weekly la némésis, where he attacked the government and louis-philippe. The small pension of which barthélemy was the beneficiary was suspended. When publication ceased, there was strong suspicion that barthélemy had been paid for his silence. Next, the incarnation of the newspaper le figaro, from whose neck hangs a bag containing “100,000” francs. This newspaper, which is no longer a republican newspaper (in fact, in 1832, it was bought by the monarchists to counter the satirical front led by "la caricature"), now supports the government of the july monarchy, as can be seen by the presence of the motif of the pear with a human face present at the end of the pendulum. On a background representing the stock exchange, that is to say the symbol of the power of money, the pl. Denounces the change in political opinion of these two newspapers, rallied to the government for financial reasons. In the background the silhouette of the towers of notre-dame cathedral stands out. The pl. Denounces the all-powerful reign of money, capable of making certain men deny their opinions. Through this, “la caricature” affirms that, unlike these two newspapers which were bought, its political ideas and its republican commitment are unshakeable.
