The gospel event of the appearance of the archangel gabriel to the virgin mary was often depicted by artists of the 15th century in a contemporary setting. Filippino depicted the bedroom of a wealthy city woman: a massive canopy bed, an armchair, a table with a music stand. Several folios and a candlestick with a candle burned to the ground make up a beautiful still life. The contrast between the ordinariness of the setting and the miracle of the appearance of the messenger from another world is remarkable. The angel's wings shimmer in the stream of light, his clothes swirl in fantastic folds, and in the golden beam above him a dove flies down to mary. 35x50. 5 cm receipt: received in 1922.
