The painting was commissioned by count peter von biron, duke of courland and sagan, and was in his possession from 1786 at friedrichsfelde palace near berlin and in his berlin city palace; from 1881 the painting was in sagan palace; on december 2nd, 1899 it was sold at the talleyrand auction for ff 17,500. -; in 1901 the painting was in the possession of comte jean de castellan in paris. Today in the oskar reinhart museum at the stadtgarten in winterthur. The painting was shown at the exhibition of the berlin art academy which opened on september 25th, 1788 (catalogue number 76).
