Francesco Maria I della Rovere by Bartolomeo Veneto (or Vincenzo Catena), Vincenzo Catena

Francesco Maria I della Rovere by Bartolomeo Veneto (or Vincenzo Catena), Vincenzo Catena

Francesco maria della rovere. According to an ancient hypothesis not supported by certain evidence, the painting depicts francesco maria della rovere, born in 1490 and duke of urbino until his death in 1538: the sword of honor that the character holds would allude to his fame as a leader. The portrait, dating back to around 1530, was assigned to catena with many reservations, after critics subsequently mentioned the names of raphael (in ancient times) and various venetian artists of the early 16th century (in particular, and recently, bartolomeo veneto). It is one of the highest examples of venetian portraiture derived from the maturity of giovanni bellini, now free from schematisms but not yet pervaded by the triumphal spirit of titian. Object Type: painting. Date: 16th century. Medium: painting. Collection: Ca' Rezzonico.
