A dutch broadside satirising the involvement of the catholic church political matters with an etching attributed by f g stephens to romeyn de hooghe. At a table stands the pope (1) addressed by marcus d'aviano (2) who stands at the right; two devils (3 and 4) stand behind. In the centre, a cardinal (5) raises his left hand. On his right, is an indian (6) wearing an exotic headdress and holding a drawn sword, and one of louis' dragoons (7) dressed in armour with an elaborate hat bearing a fleur-de-lis and holding a marotte (fool's wand); an archbishop (8) stands between them. To the left of the table, stands father petre (9) facing the pope, a small devil whispering in his ear as he writes on a paper. The table (11) is strewn with catholic articles including a print of the crucifixion, and snakes and snails. In the foreground four men burn in hell, the smoke from which rises on either side; carrying with it, on the right, imps, devils and instruments of torture (12). In the centre, above,the sun, with a devil riding on an owl; with engraved numbering 1-12, and with letterpress title and verses, including legend, in three columns. (n. P.;[1689]). Date: 1689.
