historical commentary:
a mention in the documentation indicates that these lions were brought from venice for ernest renan. “these two lions were given to renan – who adorned his office with them – by daniel manin, the famous opponent of austrian domination in italy. ” (renan bn exhibition, 1974). However, it seems that this hypothesis is erroneous. Daniele manin (1804-1857) was an italian politician, an important actor in the risorgimento. Condemned to exile before the entry of the austrian army into venice in august 1849, daniel manin took refuge in france. When he died, he was buried with his wife and daughter in the family vault of ary scheffer, in the montmartre cemetery. Their ashes were returned to the city of venice in 1868. Ernest renan was in italy between july 1849 and july 1850. In 1849, daniele manin left for france where he died in 1857. Mode of acquisition: legacy
