Below the mountain by alvik's beach, the buildings of lars montén & co's candle factory in 1864 can be seen. From the inner city to alvik: the factory was formerly located in the middle of stockholm, at klara bergsgränd 43, where stockholm central station is now located. It was then called clara tekniska fabrik and was owned by the manufacturer and wholesaler lars montén (1785-1872). After the riksdag's decision in 1862-63 to draw a connecting line through stockholm, expropriation judgments awaited. Montén therefore moved the business to alvik after he bought both alvik's and äppelviken's farms. Here at mälarstranden, he built his factory in 1864. The office and sales booth were at stora nygatan 19 in gamla stan, the connections between alvik and the city were arranged with their own steamship. After lars montén's death in 1872, the factory was taken over by relatives. At the end of the 1920s, lars montén's factory was sold to barnängen's tekniska fabrik, which then moved to alvik from bondegatan. Unobstructed view of the city: where the artist ehrenfried wahlqvist (1815-1895) stood and painted in 1864, large office complexes are now climbing. Back then it was a rural idyll far from the bustle of the city. From his place on the mountain, the artist had a clear view partly towards the city, partly to the south. Between kungsholmslandet on the left and lilla essingen in the middle of the painting you can see the northern part of långholmen and further away a cluster of houses on södermalm's northern slope towards riddarfjärden. Farthest in the haze is the stately dome of katarina church rising above the rooftops. Summer houses on the essinge islands: on lilla essingen there were few buildings, only a few occasional summer entertainments and a lap. Stora essingen looms to the right, also a popular island for summer houses. Reimersholme can be seen in the alley between lilla and stora essingen.
