Notre-Dame pump, view taken from the vault of the Gêvres quay in 1861, Theodor Josef Hubert Hoffbauer, between 1875 and 1882
This print shows the "pompe notre-dame," or "notre-dame pump," originally built in 1670 then reconstructed in 1708. This pump channeled waters from the seine into many public fountains and monuments, allowing the fountains to shoot water from twelve up to fifty feet in the air. Here shown in 1861, the pump looks rather destitute and neglected next to the pont-notre dame. The pont underwent much renovation during the 19th century, while the pump remained virtually untouched. Date: between 1875 and 1882. Dimensions: 10.6 x 15.2 cm. Medium: lithograph. Collection: Brown University Library. Pompe Notre-Dame, vue prise de la voûte du quai de Gêvres en 1861
