The burial of the Count of Orgaz, Miguel Jacinto Meléndez, 1734

The work represents the miraculous burial of gonzalo ruiz de toledo, who was lord of orgaz and died in toledo on december 3, 1323, during the reign of alfonso xi of castile, in the church of santo tomé in toledo. According to the stories of the time, when they were burying his body in said temple, saint augustine of hippo and saint stephen appeared and, holding the first by the head and the second by the feet, placed him in the tomb.
