The folk market in västerås had taken place annually on a late summer sunday, and the squares and streets were crowded with festively dressed rural youth, who sought jobs as maids and servants and stayed with farmers and employers, who also turned up in large numbers. In the 1860s, the "people's market" was officially abolished - but as late as 1871 it was held "according to old custom", even if its original purpose had been lost. Date: 1865.
