Portrait of the painter Rubé, decorator of the Opera, Paul Mathey, probably before 1899
The painter auguste-antoine rubé (1815-1899) is represented here in the decor workshop of the paris opera. With brush in hand, he is shown painting a setting for an upcoming piece. Rubé's career as a theater designer also led him to work for other parisian theaters, such as the opéra comique or the théâtre de l'odéon. Paul mathey produced several portraits of artists in their studio, such as those of the belgian painter and engraver félicien rops (1833-1898) or the sculptor rené de saint-marceaux (1845-1925), now preserved at the national museum of the châteaux of versailles and trianon.
