The Boy Martyr (Sandys), Joseph Swain, 22 November 1862

This woodcut illustrated a poem of the same title by walter thornbury ( 'once a week magazine, volume 7, page 602) in which a young christian martyr living in the time of nero successfully defeats a powerful opponent. Because the christian refuses to relinquish his faith, emperor nero orders the lions to be released into the arena. The christian is killed but goes to paradise. Date: 22 November 1862.
