description:
gilt bronze pendulum, pyramidal in shape, crowned by the two figures of the children of edward. The clock case is decorated with a rich network of plant scrolls and acanthus leaves highlighted with rows of pearls. Iconographic description:
the subject evokes the fate of edward v, minor king of england, and richard, duke of york, his younger brother locked up in 1483 in the tower of london. They were stifled on the orders of richard iii, their uncle, usurper of their rights. The two princes are shown here sitting on a bench, leaning against each other, awaiting their disastrous fate. Historical commentary:
in 1831, paul delaroche presented a painting at the salon representing les enfants d'edouard. The choice of the subject of this clock is undoubtedly linked to the success of delaroche's work, even if the iconography of the princes differs from that of the painting. Mode of acquisition: legacy
