Deveria del et lith. "; on the right: "im. De lemercier, benard & c. "; centered: "paris, chez bulla publisher, rue tiquetonne, 18" historical commentary: this series of six plates, of which the museum only retains four, produced by achille devéria and louis boulanger, illustrating lord byron's poem, taken from the story of ivan mazeppa (to which victor hugo also dedicated the poem xxxivx from the collection "les orientales") is part of the abundant engraved production devoted to this theme. We can trace its history according to three moments. The “bibliographie de la france” announced it for the first time in its issue of november 2, 1839: “no. 1036 […] -- deliverance of mazeppa, by a. Devéria. -- mazeppa surprised by the count, ditto. -- mazeppa in the forest, by boulanger. -- mazeppa telling his story, by a. Devéria. -- torment of mazeppa, by l. Boulanger. -- death of mazeppa's horse, idem. -- print lithog. By lemercier-bénard, in paris. » it seems that the publisher françois bulla republished several series of subjects from the history of mazeppa in 1845. Two were announced by the bibliographie de la france: march 22, 1845, “no. 278 -- mazeppa declares his love to thérèse. The count palatine has mazeppa arrested. Mazeppa tied on a fiery horse. Mazeppa takes revenge on count palatine: 4 subjects on the sheet. In paris, at bulla. ”, and “april 12, 1845, no. 327 -- mazeppa surprised by the count palatine. -- mazeppa is arrested by order of the count. -- torture of mazeppa. -- mazeppa's revenge against the count. In paris, at bulla. ". However, neither of these two announced series (without names of authors) corresponds to that of the museum (inv. N° 3493; 3494; 3495; 3496) which also appears intended for the french and spanish market. Finally, on october 6, 1855, the bibliographie de la france announced a resumption of the original series, in its notice “no. 1930 -- mazeppa surprised by the count. -- torture of mazeppa. -- mazeppa in the forest. -- death of mazeppa's horse. -- deliverance of mazeppa. -- mazeppa telling his story. 6 pl. , by devéria and louis boulanger. Imp. Lith. De bès and dubreuil, ed. , in paris. Gender topics”. The change of printer-lithographer, as well as the reversed meaning and the variants of the "death of the horse of mazeppa's horse" (inv. No. 414; despite the absence of the printer's name on this trimmed copy) could suggest that the series was then re-engraved. Institution: maison de victor hugo - hauteville house inventory number: 3494. Date: En 1839.
